Cost Drivers: Base, Pattern, Area and Suburb

- Pattern. Guide A adds 5 to 10% labour for herringbone, 10 to 15% for basket weave, 15 to 25% for random natural stone and 20 to 30% for circles and fans. Guide D adds 10 to 15% for special patterns. Guide C adds 10 to 15% for exposed aggregate or textured finishes.
- Suburb. Guide A puts Sandton and Bryanston 10 to 15% above average and Roodepoort and the West Rand 5 to 10% below. Guide D gives driveway paving at R350 to R650 per m² across Johannesburg, R450 to R800 in Sandton and R320 to R600 in Randburg.

Why Cheap Paving Quotes Fail
Guide B states that paving advertised from R150 per m² is usually supply-only, excludes base preparation and rubble removal, or cuts the base. It puts a lasting installed driveway from R250 to R300 per m². Guide A puts the saving from skipping or thinning the sub-base at R20 to R30 per m² and the repair bill within 3 to 5 years at R150 to R300 per m². Guide C prices repairs to individual pavers at R250 to R500 per m².
VAT and Retail Paver Prices
No guide used on this page states whether its figures include VAT; the City's 2026/27 tariffs are stated inclusive of 15% VAT. Cashbuild is a building-materials retailer that sells pavers, so its prices cover the blocks only. Block prices in Guide F run R147 to R193 per m²; installed rates add excavation, base stone, sand, edging, labour and compaction.
