Paving Cleaning Under Johannesburg Water's Level 1 Restrictions

Johannesburg Water published its Level 1 customer notice on 15 September 2026. It lists two rules for 1 September to 31 March: no watering of gardens or filling of swimming pools between 06:00 and 18:00, and no washing of paved areas and driveways with hosepipes. On 21 October 2026, Johannesburg Water asked residents to comply with those restrictions and announced targeted supply restrictions in areas with high water losses and wastage. Hosing down paving is not permitted while the restriction is in force. Paving Wiz Johannesburg plans each cleaning job around the rule:

Removing Weeds from Pavers

Weeds grow in the joint sand, not through the pavers. Pulling the leaves leaves the root, so each joint is raked out to the root and the weeds are lifted whole. The joints are refilled with dry jointing sand and compacted, which locks the pavers and closes the gap where seed settles. Sealing after re-sanding slows the next round.

Power Washing Pavers Without Damaging Them

  1. Distance and angle. The nozzle stays back and works at a low angle, so the jet lifts dirt without cutting the paver face.
  2. Surface cleaner. A rotating surface-cleaner head spreads the pressure and blasts less sand from the joints.
  3. Re-sand after. Washing loses joint sand, so joints are topped up before sealing.

Guide G flags re-sanding for block paving after washing, and gentler pressure with specialist products for natural stone.

Where the Wash Water Goes

The City of Johannesburg's Stormwater Management By-law, 2010, section 54(1)(a), prohibits discharging any substance other than unpolluted stormwater runoff and other unpolluted natural surface water runoff into a stormwater system, or onto a public road or other area from which it will be conveyed to a stormwater system. Degreaser, acid cleaner and moss killer stay on the property: runoff is blocked from the kerb inlet, residue is collected, and spent product leaves site with the waste. Sunken or broken areas found during cleaning are re-laid, and new paving options are compared under paving designs.

Paving Wiz Johannesburg: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does paving cleaning cost in Johannesburg?

Paving cleaning in Johannesburg costs about R18 to R80 per m² in 2026 price guides, depending on how dirty the paving is. Residential clean-and-seal guide rates span R75 to R150 per m² across materials, with re-sanding included in some quotes and itemised in others. On those rates, cleaning a 50 m² driveway works out at about R900 to R4,000.

Can I wash my paving with a hosepipe in Johannesburg?

No, not during the current restrictions. Johannesburg Water's Level 1 restrictions, in force from 1 September 2026 to 31 March 2027, do not permit washing paved areas and driveways with hosepipes.

How often should pavers be resealed?

Every 2 to 5 years, according to Johannesburg cost guides: one gives 2 to 3 years and another 3 to 5 years. Clay brick and concrete pavers take different sealers.

When should new paving be sealed?

Within 4 weeks of installation, according to a March 2026 Johannesburg paving cost guide. Sealing early resists staining and weed growth.

How much does oil stain removal cost?

R25 to R40 per m² or R50 to R150 per stain, according to a December 2025 Gauteng cleaning guide. A November 2025 Johannesburg guide gives the same R50 to R150 per stain.

Does pressure washing damage pavers?

Yes, when done badly. A narrow jet too close to the surface strips joint sand and etches soft concrete. Washing is followed by re-sanding the joints.

Can chemical cleaner run into the street drain?

No. The City's Stormwater Management By-law, 2010, section 54(1)(a), prohibits discharging any substance other than unpolluted stormwater runoff and other unpolluted natural surface water runoff into a stormwater system, or onto a public road or other area from which it will be conveyed to a stormwater system. Cleaner residue is contained and collected on site.
